A dancer of "compelling charisma, expression and riveting artistry" Flamenco dancer Fiona Malena performs world-wide in countries such as Canada, Spain, USA, Mexico and the United Kingdom. Collaborating with Spain's top flamenco artists such as El Torombo and Pedro Sierra, other noted performances include the Peña de Londres (London, England) and the Alcázar palaces of Jerez de la Frontera and Seville, Spain. Fiona directs and performs in her own group "Fiona Malena Flamenco," a passionate and innovative ensemble which fuses the power of traditional flamenco with an exciting blend of world music and jazz.

Biography

Described as a dancer of unique and mesmerizing talent, Fiona Malena received her training and formation as a dancer in Seville, Spain. Her acclaimed mentors and teachers include Farruquito, Juana Amaya, Concha Vargas and Andrés Marín, among others.Fiona has choreographed and presented new works for the stage since 2001. Past performances have included collaborations with Spanish and international artists such as Pedro Sierra, Ramón Martínez, Juan Ogalla, La Tobala, Kiko de Alcalá, Niño de Elche, Oscar Lago and David Palomar. Performances in Spain have included performing as a soloist in the production Y ahora soy yo la Torera in the Alcazár of Seville, Teatro Cerezo of Carmona and the Alcazár of Jerez de la Frontera. Other performances include Patio Las Cruces, Arrayans Tarde de Flamenco Puro, Tablao Puerta del Sol, T de Triana and Pistadigital, among others. Fiona continues to frequently perform with her Seville-based flamenco ensemble in Spain and elsewhere.Fionas performances in Canada and the States include opening for Academy Award winner Buffy Sainte-Marie (Jack Singer Concert Hall, Calgary). Fiona has also been a guest artist with Pavlo, the Jorge Miguel Flamenco Ensemble, Flamenco Rosario and Enrique Esmeralda Spanish Dance Company with guest artists Juan Ogalla and Encarna Anillo (Harbourfront Centre, Toronto). In 2009 Fiona traveled to London, England teaching workshops with Escuela de Baile Londres and performing in the Peña de Londres accompanied by Jerez based guitarist Pascual de Lorca. In the fall of 2010 Fiona collaborated with legendary dancer El Torombo in a series of concerts in Canada and toured Mexico with company Flamenco Rosario. This winter Fionas ensemble was featured in Seville, Spain in the series Miercoles a Compás at El Monasterio de La Cartuja and for the inauguration of a new cultural performance space La Fragua. Fiona is currently preparing upcoming fusion projects with Albertan saxophonist Oliver Miguel and will perform with multiple Juno award winner pianist Hilario Durán in March. As the artistic director for the Fiona Malena Flamenco Society, Fiona will direct the featured performance for the first Calgary International Flamenco Festival in September, 2011.
